Thanks to the "Eisenerzers" from a small farming village to a traffic hub

In the northeast of the Saarlouis district in central Saarland, in the hilly Saar-Nahe mountain region, lies the town of Lebach, which has been inhabited since the third century B.C. and was first mentioned in a document in 950, with its current population of just under 20,000. In the Middle Ages, Lebach still lived almost exclusively from agriculture and animal husbandry, but then experienced a veritable mining boom in the 17th and 18th centuries due to the rich local iron ore deposits. The locally abundant clay ironstones were even christened with the town name "Lebacher Eier" (Lebach Eggs) and were mined until the late 19th century and brought to the Dillingen ironworks for iron production. The economic upswing due to the mineral resources then ensured that the small village became an important traffic hub. With the incorporation of the once independent villages of Aschbach, Dörsdorf, Eidenborn, Falscheid, Gresaubach, Knorscheid, Landsweiler, Niedersaubach, Rümmelbach, Steinbach and Thalexweiler in 1964 and 1974, Lebach grew to approximately its present size and was finally granted city rights in 1977. In the meantime, the middle, market and traffic center has also developed into an important regional educational center with a total of 13 schools and 8 kindergartens and thus into a residential area and catchment area popular with young families with children.Since1961 the 1100 soldiers of the paratrooper battalion 261 have been stationed in the garrison. The weekly market, the largest of its kind in southwestern Germany, as well as the Lebach Carnival ("Faasend") in February/March and the "Green Week", which has been celebrated in mid-September since 1921, are also known beyondthe region.

Living quietly in the country with all the amenities of the modern city

In accordance with their former independence, the 11 present-day districts mentioned above still present themselves as quite rural in the 64 km² area of Lebach. Fittingly, they have also chosen the slogan "the green center" as the motto for their own Internet presence. The exact geographic center of the Saarland is also located in the district of Falscheid. Despite their village character, all districts have a modern infrastructure including medical and social facilities as well as a lively club life. Examples include the Lebach hospital, the city library and the city hall, the cultural center in Eidenborn, the village community center "Wendalinushaus" in Gresaubach, the cultural and sports center Am Stangenwald in Landsweiler, the recreation area with pond in Steinbach, and the youth center and the Don Bosco Hall in Thalexweiler. In view of the demographic aging of society, which is becoming unmistakable throughout the Saarland as well as in Lebach, the highly regarded model project "Aging Comfortably - Moving Lebach Businesses" has also been launched locally. The alliance of local and regional craftsmen and service providers with partners and public institutions is intended to make as many houses and apartments as possible habitable for age-appropriate living, as well as to build up neighborly and social networks and develop appropriate products and services. Part of this is also the care support point of the Saarlouis district, which regularly offers advice and assistance on the legal care reform every 14 days in the Lebach town hall and answers questions from citizens.Thereare also a total of 32 playgrounds in the city area for the youngest residents.

The city takes care of its real estate, senior citizens, clubs and businesses

Lebach's local government is also quite busy in terms of urban renewal and further commercial settlements. At the moment, the new commercial area "Auf Häpelt" is being connected with the construction of a new traffic circle on highway 336 in the direction of Hüttersdorf, and the two federal highways B 269 and B 268 are being thoroughly renovated. The expansion of the redevelopment area of the train station area to include the city center was already decided by the city council in 2013 and is currently being implemented by the newly founded project office Zentrummanagement, for example with the first "Lebacher Immobilienstammtisch" and various lectures on the subject of tax advantages through redevelopment, among other things. The local business development department, which is part of the press and public relations office, is also happy to provide information about funding opportunities for local businesses planning to invest in the area. The State Office for Foreigners and Refugees, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees and the Saarland Chamber of Agriculture are all located in Lebach. Also enjoyed by locals and visitors alike are the "Asian Garden" near the town hall on the banks of the Theel River, the "premium hiking trail" Kaltensteinpfad as well as the circular trails around Dörsdorf and Höchsten and the Hoxberg hiking trail. With its currently still comparatively low prices for apartments (approx. 1,000 to 2,000 euros/m²) and houses (approx. 60,000 to 270,000 euros), the city of Lebach is therefore not only recommended as a livable, but also still relatively inexpensive environment and residential area in central Saarland.
