Find a rental apartment in Kiel

The state capital of Kiel is home to almost 250,000 inhabitants. The maritime flair of the city on the Kiel Fjord is a feel-good factor for many people. Although the city is one of the 30 largest municipalities in Germany, it is considered quiet and calm. However, this does not apply to the housing market.

Housing shortage in Kiel - demand is rising

Rents in Kiel have been rising significantly since the mid-2010s. As of 2024, they stand at around EUR 11.50 per square meter for rental apartments. As around 15 percent of the stock is affected by people moving in and out every year, there is an additional demand effect. Kiel city council itself acknowledges a housing shortage for individual districts. All of this means that rents in the typical B-location city are still comparatively moderate, but are tending to rise disproportionately.

Popular districts and affordable alternatives

If you want to rent an apartment in Kiel, you should find out exactly what the price differences are. The Altstadt and Vorstadt districts, as well as Düsternbrook, are relatively expensive. Cheap rents for apartments can be found in the districts of Mettenhof, parts of Gaarden-Ost and Hassee. The differences to the average are relatively small, but amount to around 2 euros/m² in each case.

Renting apartments privately

Private apartments are sometimes offered at low prices in Kiel. Landlords do not have to pay an estate agent and can therefore keep rents comparatively low. Although there are exceptions, it can therefore make sense to look for and rent apartments privately. We only list such offers on our site.
