Kühlungsborn is one of the oldest and most popular seaside resorts on the Baltic Sea, and boasts the second-longest German seaside promenade after the resorts on Usedom, stretching over 3100 meters. The town forms the heart of the "Mecklenburg Riviera."

The seaside resort is the largest bathing and recreational area in Mecklenburg. It is located on the Baltic Sea coast, directly on the Mecklenburg Bay, approximately 25 km west of Rostock. Kühlungsborn is a central hub for the surrounding area.

The wide sandy beach of the seaside resort stretches for around six kilometers along the Baltic Sea coast, and is bordered by a coastal dune covered with beach grass and the promenade. Between the beach and the built-up area of the town lies a strip of forest that protects Kühlungsborn from the wind and weather, as well as from the sand blowing in from the coast. The trees and shrubs of this forest strip are part of the Kühlungsborn municipal forest, which covers approximately 1500 hectares and surrounds the town.
