Situated idyllically on the "Dahme" tributary of the Spree River, Grünau owes its name to a village description dating back to 1749, which referred to it as a "green meadow." In 1866, the Berlin-Görlitz Railway built a stop in Grünau. At the same time, the Berlin Steamship Company opened a landing stage on the "Dahme." This transformed Grünau into a popular destination, attracting thousands of visitors from Berlin seeking relaxation during the summer weekends. After 1875, numerous representatives of the financially prosperous middle class settled in this charming location, building the first factory buildings, grand villas, and thriving restaurants. No later than June 27, 1880, with the Dahme Rowing Competition, the area was discovered for water sports. Around the year 1900, the still-existing rowing course was built, featuring a covered grandstand and a pavilion for the German Emperor. In 1936, it became the venue for the Olympic rowing and canoeing competitions. At the beginning of the 20th century... In the early 20th century, the development of infrastructure in and around Grünau progressed rapidly. In 1905, the first water treatment plant was built, connecting Grünau with Adlershof and Altglienicke. Three years later, the gas and electricity networks were expanded.
