The recreation area of Bad Erna is located approximately 4 km south of Doberlug-Kirchhain in the Elbe-Elster district of Brandenburg, within the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft nature park. The West Pond, also known as Bad Erna – West Pond, is a central part of this area and was created from a former brown coal open-pit mine. Originally, the ponds of the recreation area "Bad Erna" were formed as residual pits from an old brown coal mine, where coal was extracted from 1873 to 1920. After mining operations ceased, the pits filled with groundwater and have been used as swimming lakes since 1927. Today, the area comprises several artificially created lakes, including the Insel Pond, the West Pond, the Blue Lake, the Barschteich, and the Franzosenteich. The West Pond, with an area of approximately 7.6 hectares, offers a variety of recreational activities such as swimming, hiking, and nature observation. The area is surrounded by forest and has facilities such as a forest inn, which is idyllically located on the lake and provides visitors with food and drinks. A children's playground with a pirate ship and a locomotive invites especially the little guests to play and have fun. The region is easily accessible via the town of Doberlug-Kirchhain and offers visitors a retreat in the middle of nature, ideal for relaxation and recreational activities.
