The town, located northwest of the Harz mountains, has approximately 16,000 inhabitants. The town comprises a total of 17 districts, including Schulenburg in the Upper Harz, Wildeman, and Altenau-Schulenberg in the Upper Harz. Altenau offers a variety of attractions, including the wooden church of St. Nikolai, dating back to 1669, the former town hall from 1673, a herb garden, the Polsterberg cable car station, and an exhibition on the history of the Upper Harz region in the local heritage museum.
