A place full of memories – the former "Stadtcafé" (City Café) in Halberstadt.
On October 19, 1963, the City Café opened its doors and quickly became a vibrant meeting place, a hub for encounters, conversations, and a brief escape from everyday life. Generations of Halberstadt residents associated the café not only with good coffee, but also with conversations, laughter, and quiet moments by the window. However, in the mid-1990s, the café era came to an end. The building fell into a long period of neglect, remaining unused but never forgotten. About a year and a half ago, the city of Halberstadt acquired the building – not only to preserve it, but also to safeguard a piece of history. In particular, the large-scale wall mosaic "A Day at the Beach" by Pia and Walter Ebeling, a significant work of art that feels like a window into another time, is to be secured and made accessible again. The future is beginning now: renovation work is planned, a new use is forthcoming – and with it, the opportunity to breathe new life into the City Café. In 2022, as part of the MKH Art Biennale, the building was once again filled with life – a taste of what is to come. The City Café is more than just a building. It is an emotional anchor, a place with soul – and perhaps soon again a place where memories are created.
