Recklinghausen is connected to the A2 and A43 highways, and the Bundesstraße 225 also begins within the city limits. The city wall encircles the historical old town and serves as the starting point for important roads leading in and out of the city. Recklinghausen also has access to waterways; the city harbor of Recklinghausen is located in the south of the city, on the Rhine-Herne Canal.
