Until 1974, Hildesheim was an independent city, serving as the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Hildesheim. In 1974, as part of the regional reform in Lower Saxony, Hildesheim became a large, independent city. Since then, it has formed the district of Hildesheim, which includes the area of the former Hildesheim-Marienburg district, expanded in 1977 to include the former Alfeld (Leine) district. From 1885 to 1978, there was a regional administrative division called Hildesheim.
