The apartment

185 square meters, 6 rooms, 3.90 ceiling height, two bathrooms, one toilet.

You enter the building from the second half of the 19th century through a stately entrance hall and after a few steps you find yourself in front of your apartment door, which gives you an idea of the impressive ceiling height.

Behind it awaits the entrance area of the 28 square meter hallway, whose pitch pine floorboards take you to all the rooms - wide enough for a wardrobe or even to store bicycles, long enough to test ride them in.

To the right is the first of the five bedrooms, which has a direct view of Hansaplatz and, like all rooms, has floorboards (15 square meters). Opposite the entrance, also with a view of the square, is the very spacious eat-in kitchen, which, at almost 60 square meters, you can also invite the whole family into. With natural light from two directions, you can cook at an open fitted kitchen and help yourself from the practical built-in cupboard behind you, while your guests admire the herringbone parquet flooring and the well-preserved stucco at the long wooden counter.

Back at the entrance, follow the hallway and you will find a spacious room with washing machine and dryer connections on the left, followed by a guest WC and the centrally located bathroom. To the right are two smaller rooms, 14 and 10 square meters each, with a view of a quiet inner courtyard. To the left is another room (17 square meters) with its own shower room and a view of the rear courtyard, which is also the orientation of the largest room in the apartment at 24 square meters at the end of the hallway.

Despite the prominent location in the middle of Hansaplatz, you have complete peace and privacy in four rooms, while the eat-in kitchen and the front-facing room comfortably satisfy any curiosity about the square from the mezzanine floor.

The rare ceiling height of 3.90 meters ensures a wide, breathing feeling of space and is also extremely practical for families, for example, with bunk beds or loft beds, creating several rooms in one.

The house community consists of families, couples and singles alike, including a musician and a publisher, 12 parties in total, almost all owners. In 2016, the house was modernized with new windows and in 2019 with a new roof covering including a glass dome; the rear façade was renovated in 2013.

Hansaplatz has always been a meeting place for artists and creative people. A world-famous DJ lives here, a platinum musician and a well-known actor live opposite, one of Germany's best-known presenters lives not far away and a well-known magician has opened a museum for the art of magic here. Hansaplatz is a meeting place for people from a wide variety of creative professions, which can give the impression that the square itself is the stage of the adjacent theater - where, it cannot be denied, dramas also take place. For some years now, Hansaplatz has sometimes become a meeting place for unhappy people, and it always ends up in the news.

But this is precisely why Hansaplatz is still something of Hamburg's most central insider tip, even though it is only a few minutes' walk from the main train station. And the pattern is not new: artists enhance a still undefined location until it becomes trendy and unaffordable. Wilhelminian-style buildings, urban planning upgrades, a renovation of the famous Hansa Fountain in the middle of the square, more and more restaurants all around and simply the unbeatable location are making Hansaplatz increasingly popular, even with families.

Compared to other "upmarket" districts, such as Eppendorf or Winterhude, St. Georg is much more heterogeneous. The Lange Reihe adjacent to Hansaplatz is lined with fashion boutiques, fancy restaurants and trendy cafés and it is hard to find a street in Hamburg that exudes such savoir-vivre and pleasure in summer as the Lange Reihe. You can hear the lively murmur all the way to Hansaplatz, which itself is full of tables and chairs. On the other side of Hansaplatz runs the Steindamm, famous throughout Hamburg, where, in addition to Hamburg's famous original language cinema "Savoy" and several variety theaters, numerous international restaurants and stores spread an almost bazaar-like atmosphere, especially at weekends - loudly haggling greengrocers, a parade of expensive cars, the smell of freshly baked bread, grilled food and oriental spices.

A number of cultural institutions are located not far from Hansaplatz, with the Schauspielhaus within sight and the Kunsthalle just a few hundred meters behind it. Galleries, museums, cinemas and theaters - almost all of Hamburg's cultural institutions are within walking distance. Just a few minutes' walk away is the Outer Alster, popular with joggers, walkers and water sports enthusiasts alike, and a little closer still is Lohmühlenpark, with football and basketball courts, a boules court and a large playground. The main railway station, where all of Hamburg's S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines stop, so you can always get home no matter which train you are on, separates St. Georg from Hamburg city center with all the major stores and the town hall - also within walking distance.
