Location
Wetzlar is a city in central Hesse and a former imperial city. It is the twelfth largest city in Hesse with 54,164 inhabitants (December 31, 2023). Wetzlar is the district town of the Lahn-Dill district and - like six other larger medium-sized towns in the state of Hesse - a town with special status. It takes on the tasks of the district and is similar to an independent city in many areas. As an important cultural, industrial and commercial center, the university town is one of the ten regional centers in the state of Hesse. From 1689 to 1806, the city was the last seat of the Imperial Chamber Court.
Wetzlar and Giessen, not far to the east, are the two cores of the central Hessian conurbation with around 200,000 inhabitants; the urban agglomeration has around 275,000 inhabitants. There are close links with the nearby Rhine-Main region.
Wetzlar's economic importance is based on its optical, precision engineering, electrotechnical and steel processing industries.
