Location
Freiburg is a city of 250,000 inhabitants in the southwest of Freiburg. It is characterized by its university students and has always been considered a city for retirees. The old town is surrounded by Wilhelminian-style districts such as Wiehre and Oberau. Economic development is continuous. Major companies include Pfizer, Rhodia and the University Hospital. Smaller companies include Jobrad, Hüttinger and United Planet. Attempts are still being made to position small companies with an affinity for university as start-ups and to create innovation networks. There have always been many regional products to buy at the cathedral market and weekly markets. Freiburg is also a cycling and sports city; many in the Wiehre prefer a cargo bike to a second car. Wiehre is one of Freiburg's most popular districts, mainly due to its rich stock of old buildings, comparatively quiet streets and attractive location between the city center and green outskirts. Situated between the city center and the local recreation areas towards Günterstal, it has always attracted people who appreciate the special charm of Wiehre with its many old villas, but also attractive new buildings on the mostly traffic-calmed streets. The high rents and property prices alone make Wiehre primarily a residential area for academics and the upper middle class. The development consists largely of villas, townhouses and large apartment buildings with spacious apartments. Within the Wiehre there are many small stores, often from the ecological-alternative sector, and all the stores for daily needs. There are also many international restaurants and cafés here. The historic sub-center around the old Freiburg-Wiehre train station still exists today, and a weekly market is also held there. The main shopping street is the relatively busy Günterstalstraße, which connects the city of Freiburg with Schauinsland via Günterstal. Traffic has been calmed in recent years by the creation of a series of one-way streets.
The commercial area is close to the Lorettoberg and one of the city's largest clinics, the Loretto Hospital. The Loretto pool, an old outdoor swimming pool and the Loretto school are also nearby. From here you can reach the city center on foot in fifteen minutes. There are two streetcar stops nearby and many facilities for daily needs (doctors, pharmacies, Waldorf school, art studios, etc.).
