Location
Hof is a Franconian independent town on the Saale river in the north-east of Bavaria. With around 46,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in the administrative district of Upper Franconia after Bamberg and Bayreuth. The city is a regional center, a university town with around 6000 students, the center of the Hof region and the seat of the district administration of the Hof district, which completely surrounds the city. Hof has been a member of the Euregio Egrensis European region since 1993 and the Nuremberg metropolitan region since 2005. Hof is also the center of the Hochfranken region. Hof is located in the planning region of Upper Franconia East, of which the city is the administrative center. Geographically, Hof is located almost exactly in the middle between Frankfurt am Main
and Prague, Munich and Berlin and can be reached in two to three hours by car via the A9, A72 or A93 highways. With its main railway station, Hof is connected to the national rail network via regional express and regional trains.
As a modern business location, Hof has around 23,000 employees subject to social insurance contributions, around a quarter of whom work in the manufacturing industry, a quarter in trade and transport and half in other service sectors. The manufacturing industry in Hof has a medium-sized structure and is an important basis of Hof's economy. Some of the companies are world market leaders in their sectors. In the retail sector, Hof supplies a large region extending as far as southern Saxony and southern Thuringia with a purchasing power volume of around one billion euros and around 200,000 inhabitants. With a turnover of over 400 million euros and more than 500 retail outlets, Hof is an important retail location in north-eastern Bavaria with a high centrality rating.
The city of Hof also offers a wide range of educational and healthcare facilities as well as cultural and leisure activities. These include its own three-sector theater (music theater, drama, ballet), the Hof Symphony Orchestra with music school, the Freiheitshalle congress and event center, the Untreusee recreation center with 65 hectares of water and a sailing center, the Theresienstein city park with zoological, botanical and geological gardens. There are modern general education schools and specialized technical colleges through to the University of Applied Sciences, attractive sports facilities, a high number of doctors, social facilities and the Hof Clinic.
