With around 4,500 inhabitants, Marienborn is one of the smallest districts in Mainz. Early recorded names of Marienborn are Brunnon, Burne and Born (mhd. "spring"). The name Mariäborn is mentioned for the first time in the middle of the 17th century and Marienborn in 1685.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Marienborn was part of the fortress wall around Mainz. Thanks to its location at the foot of the Rhine-Hessian plateau, the town was ideally suited as a military headquarters, for example during the siege and recapture of French-occupied Mainz by a Prussian army in 1793. Duke Karl August von Weimar, whose troops were also stationed near Marienborn at the time, brought his Minister of State Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with him to observe the fighting around the town from May 27 to June 26.
Marienborn has retained its village character. The medieval layout with the typical central German farmsteads around the church is a good example. The lively community life, as well as the activities of the churches and community institutions and the festivals, are evidence of an intact community.
