The town of Reichenbach with the district of Mylau, together with the towns of Greiz, Elsterberg and Netzschkau, formed the "Nordöstliches Vogtland" association of towns and has around 20,000 inhabitants. Since January 1, 2016, Mylau has been a district of the large district town of Reichenbach. Mylau was first mentioned in the local chronicles in 1212. Mylau owes its development into a small town to Mylau Castle. The listed castle is the only almost completely preserved and largest castle complex in the Saxon Vogtland and is therefore an outstanding architectural monument. The museum was reopened in the fall of 2014 with a new permanent exhibition and the castle is actively maintained through cultural projects and the support association. The largest brick bridge in the world, the Göltzschtal Bridge, and the town church in Mylau with its original Silbermann organ are also impressive and attract many visitors to Mylau. In summer, Mylau's open-air swimming pool attracts many bathers and newly created hiking trails lead far into the Vogtland region. The state elementary school is located directly on the market square, while the Evangelisches Gymnasium Mylau, located below the castle, is a state-approved alternative school that prepares students for all other general education qualifications in addition to the Abitur.
