Location
The large district town of Emmendingen has almost 30,000 inhabitants and is often referred to as the gateway to the Black Forest and Kaiserstuhl due to its location. In addition to the town center, the districts of Mundingen, Windenreute, Maleck, Kollmarsreute and Wasser are also part of the urban area.
There are a large number of kindergartens and childcare facilities in the town. Emmendingen was first mentioned in a document in 1091, but there was probably already an Alemannic settlement here in the 7th century.
The town experienced an economic boom in the 18th century, when Goethe's brother-in-law Johann Georg Schlosser worked as chief bailiff in Emmendingen and laid the foundations for the industrialization of the town with his reforms. This was followed by the connection to the Offenburg-Freiburg railroad line in 1845 and the settlement of many large companies, which led to a sharp increase in the population.
Today, Emmendingen is the medium-sized center of the district of the same name. Visitors to the town appreciate the charm of the historic old town, the attractive shopping opportunities, the renowned cultural institutions, the culinary experiences and the major festivals, markets and music festivals.
The Teningen junction of the A5 Karlsruhe-Basel highway is approx. 6 km away. Emmendingen is located on the Baden main line from Mannheim to Basel. There are six city bus routes and two shared cabs within the town. A Teningen city bus line connects to Emmendingen railroad station. The town is part of the Freiburg regional transport association.
