Emmendingen was first mentioned in a document in 1091, but there was probably already an Alemannic settlement here in the 7th century.

The town experienced an economic boom in the 18th century, when Goethe's brother-in-law Johann Georg Schlosser worked as chief bailiff in Emmendingen and laid the foundations for the industrialization of the town with his reforms. This was followed by the connection to the Offenburg-Freiburg railroad line in 1845 and the settlement of many large companies, which led to a sharp increase in the population.

Today, Emmendingen is the medium-sized center of the district of the same name.
