Rathenauplatz is located on the eastern edge of the old town, between the historic Laufer Gate and the Wöhrder Gate. The eastern side of the square, between Sulzbacher Straße to the north and Äußerer Cramer-Klett-Straße to the south, is characterized by office buildings. These buildings house the headquarters of TeamBank and UniVersa insurance, as well as branches of Fürst Fugger Private Bank, TeamBank, and the Nürnberger insurance group. Along the western side of the square, there is a green space built on the remains of the city wall, which was demolished in 1874. Rathenauplatz is one of the busiest squares in Nuremberg. It is a major intersection where the Bayreuther Straße and Sulzbacher Straße (designated as B 2 and B 14 respectively from the Ringstraße) meet, along with the Nuremberg Old Town Ring.

The square also plays an important role in public transportation. The underground subway station, which shares the same name, is a major hub where subway lines diverge. At the above-ground tram stop, tram lines 8, which originate from the main train station, stop, and there are also connections to various city and regional bus lines.
