Celle is the district town of the district of the same name in the federal state of Lower Saxony. The town is located in the Braunschweig-Hanover metropolitan region. With a picturesque old town with over 400 half-timbered houses and a Renaissance and Baroque castle, Celle is one of the most beautiful residential and half-timbered towns in Germany and is considered the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath. The Aller flows through Celle. Within the city limits, the River Lachte flows into the Aller in the east and the River Fuhse in the west. With its IC train stop, Celle is connected to the ICE interchange in Hanover in a short journey time. There is also a direct S-Bahn connection to the city and greater Hanover area as well as a rail connection to Hanover Airport. The overseas ports of Hamburg and Bremen can be reached in just 1½ hours by car from Celle.
