Erkrath is still very young as a town. It was only on March 15, 1966 that the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia handed it its town charter from the then Minister of the Interior, making it the youngest municipality in the district of Mettmann with town rights. Erkrath was separated from the former rural municipality of Gerresheim back in 1898, making it independent.
